How to apply flea treatment to your cat

Please make sure you treat your cat regularly with a proper vet-approved flea product all year round. Monthly topical flea treatments (used on the skin in the back of the neck) are Advantage, Frontline, Revolution, Advocate and Broadline. A monthly oral flea treatment is Comfortis. Then there is Bravecto topical flea treatment, which lasts 3 months, and can be used on kittens from 11 weeks of age.

Some flea products treat (some) worms, too. Broadline is the only flea treatment that treats all worms as well. Revolution (even the new Revolution plus), Advocate and Bravecto plus don’t treat all the worms your cat can get, so you will still have to use a 3-monthly allwormer treatment.

It is not very difficult applying flea treatment:

Give your cat some tender loving care first. It may help to have two people – one person to apply the flea treatment and one to hold your cat (see ‘How to restrain your cat’).

Make sure your cat is on a stable non-slip surface such as the floor. A firm table or work surface with a non-slip surface works well, too.

Allow your cat to sit upright in front of you, facing away from you.

Use a flea comb to part the fur, just behind the head. If you apply the flea treatment too far back (e.g. between the shoulder blades), your cat may be able to turn his head and lick it off. If you look at the picture below, you see that you make the part about the same length of your thumb.

Then you apply the flea treatment directly on the part, so it is in contact with the skin, along the whole length. Your thumb holds the fur out of the way. You can then use the flea comb to gently comb the fur back over the wet part. Make sure you don’t touch your cat in this area until it is completely dry. For this reason, applying it just before bedtime may work best.
